I find it impossible to introduce myself in writing to strangers, telling them a little bit about me in a way that helps them understand who I am. I worry about the image my self-description creates.
WTF?
I’m certainly not a gray-haired granny knitting booties from a rocker but I do have nine grandchildren. I don’t knit, though. I try it every couple of years. My fingers are too fat. The work is mindless. The instructions are the stuff of metaphysical science and I can’t understand them.
I also have a rocker on my screened front porch and I love to sit in it. Since I’ve had it, a pair of them actually, I’ve assumed they were poorly made and that the chair part was placed too far forward on the rockers, causing the chair to lean forward and the rocking back action to be a task, not a relaxing endeavor which is the job of the chairs, to relax me while I stare into the abyss.
I like the chairs anyway because they look good on the porch, evoking just the mood I set out to create.
Last fall, in preparation for a hard, cold, dark, prison-like winter, I went to move the chairs into the barn for storage. During this once yearly exercise, one of the chairs happened to be turned backwards, facing the house. I plopped into it for a quick rest and to lament the coming months of cold, dreary, hateful hell in the middle of the United States. I nearly rocked ass-over-head backwards and realized at once that the chairs are constructed exactly right. My porch is sloped.
Also, my hair is not gray. I’m a Boomer. Full of vain pride and trying desperately to stay relevant in my old age. Nice to meet you.

Hahaha.. well it was pre-Labor Day so I thought I could pull it off. I normally wear my ninja slippers so I can climb tall buildings and whatnot. I was feeling pretty fancy that day…:)

No such thing as overstaying…please do stay! I have no chardonnay but I have some cab sav in the wine rack. That sounds pretty fancy but in full disclosure it’s the ONLY bottle in the wine rack and the rack itself is something I found at a thrift store….but still..I have fancy glasses so hang around. Appreciate the warm welcome and next time I come over I’ll bring some wine – a bottle to drink and a bottle for the wine rack. God Bless you for being a Granny….I had my first child at 40 so I’m a Boomer with kids in middle school….see why I immediately jump to the wine thing? They just got home from the first back back to school since the holiday….one of them is happy…I wonder how the other one’s doing, LOL.

Oh… that struggle is real. I started late as well and had my last one in my early 30s. I never really fit in at school functions. At one point my baby was in high school and I had a grandchild so yeah…life is messy. Well mine is.

The first grandchild was not from the high school girl…not that it matters…but the oldest went right out and got married and started a baby-making tour. She ended up with three but now I’ve got nine grands and two on the way.

Well you know what they say… great minds think alike.. okay that doesn’t really work for us but maybe we are twins separated at birth. That works better. We both certainly had a wild time in our youth. And both have great minds for that matter. We just don’t think alike. 🙂

PS, I wanted to respond to your post. I am like you. I want to stay “relevant” in my middle years. I am my school’s yearbook teacher, so I feel it’s important to keep my ear to the pulse of what is happening today. I also make a pop culture magazine with the students. I am a grandma by marriage, so I related to what you wrote in your introduction.

This was so funny,and made me want to be a grandma. I know…I should probably start with being a Ma first. I have always envisioned having a rocker on my porch. I will be sure to have a flat porch too! Got here through C-Sweet…will be staying coz you sound awesome.

Being grandma is the best thing ever. Flat porches are essential to good rocking, however, I am proof you can achieve a decent rock even with a slope. I love C-Sweet–she keeps me laughing. My mother and my sister knit, and I just never could get the hang of it. They also sew. I can’t do that either and that’s ok, because I am neither my mother or my sister. I really enjoyed this post.
I will be 48 this year, and I went blonde to hide the grey, (It looks like highlights now. I get all kinds of complements on it and I take them gladly).

Thank you, I’m glad you liked it. I think we all have some version of how we think we are interpreted in our world(s). I do sew but haven’t for awhile–self taught because a daughter needed a fancy dress I could not afford and I could not afford sewing lessons. I’m not sure why I love sewing because I’m not normally very crafty. I think it must be the creating part.

Love the pics, they always think of grandparents as someone magical, I’m going to be 62 next Wednesday and with 10 grandchildren there’s never a dull moment when they’re around. I bet you really do look like the first picture (how you see yourself) because I know I still look as though I’m in my teens. I don’t recognise the old get in the mirror though I feel I should xo

I’m also glad you added this to Bernadette’s Salon! I only have two grandkids..but this fits for me, too. I’m sticking to the Glinda concept…bubbles instead of cycles for me!
I did knit…once…no fancy stitches, though. I bought a book when I was pregnant and my son, the night person, would wake me by doing somersaults every night at 3 am. I decided to use the awake time to mindlessly knit. It thought I could create a sweater as a Christmas surprise for my husband who wouldn’t see me doing it and the boredom would put me back to sleep once my son decided he was done ping ponging between a rib and my blatter. I did finish and it came out so big and awful, I quit…of course, my husband also thought it would be safer if he took the needles away from me once I had a child! Enjoyed your blog!
